  1. Multifunctional flood defences

Flood defences protect us from the water. In the Dutch landscape, they often take the shape of dikes. However, in cities, they are sometimes less prominent. Even so, they also protect the public and businesses here.
    Floods
  2. Joint Industry Project OSCAR

Scour (erosion of soil around structures) is one of the main causes for foundation failure during drilling operations with jack-up platforms. In spite of being regarded as a critical issue, there is a lack of guidelines and/or validated tools to predict scour and design a scour protection at the foundations of jack-ups. Deltares therefore…
  3. Shin Ulchin Nuclear Power Plants 1&2: Hydraulic verification of the cooling water system

Korea Electric Power Corporation Engineering & Construction Co., Inc (KEPCO E&C) designed the Shin Ulchin Nuclear Power Plants 1&2: “SUN 1&2”. The plants will be located North of Ulchin at the eastern part of the Korean peninsula. For these SUN 1&2 units, KEPCO E&C designed a pumping station and submerged intake and…
  4. Cutting maintenance costs for offshore wind farms using improved forecasts

Hard winds, strong currents or high waves. Maintenance vessels for offshore wind farms often have to stay in port, or return to shore, when bad weather suddenly blows in. The resulting costs for the dozens of offshore wind farms in the North Sea are high. Operations and maintenance costs account for almost one third of the kWh price of offshore…
    Energy transition
  5. Koopmanspolder testing ground: a paradise for water birds

The Netherlands needs new types of water management in order to be prepared for the impact of climate change. Deltares has teamed up with Rijkswaterstaat to develop the 'inland shore' concept, a new approach to water storage that combines different functions. The concept has been used for the first time in the Koopmanspolder near Andijk in North…
    Health water, soil
  6. GO-FRESH: Geohydrological Opportunities FRESH water supply

In the SW delta of the Netherlands, the agricultural sector is confronted with growing impacts of water shortage and salinization. Farmers and government are aware of the negative influence on the development of the agricultural sector. A reliable freshwater supply is considered as one of the key issues for future development and sustainable…
    Water supply
  7. Bubble screen separates salt and fresh water

Fresh water is precious, so contamination by salt water should be prevented as much as possible. Deltares, Royal Haskoning and Rijkswaterstaat have developed an innovative system that almost completely prevents the penetration of salt water through locks, allows ships to pass through the locks faster, and is also quite a lot cheaper to maintain…
    Water supply
  8. FOME-BES: Fibre-Optic Monitoring

Ground energy systems can make an major contribution to achieving CO2 mitigation targets. Unfortunately, not all ground energy systems perform optimally. That can result in unnecessarily low energy and financial yields, excessive groundwater claims, ineffective groundwater use, and therefore the sub-optimal exploitation of the energy potential in…
  9. FAST: Foreshore Assessment using Space Technology

The European Programme for Research is funding a consortium of five European institutions: the Netherlands (Deltares and NIOZ), United Kingdom (University of Cambridge), Romania (GEOECOMAR) and Spain (University. of Cadiz), to work on the FAST project (Foreshore Assessment using Space Technology).
  10. Morphological studies for Al Faw port

Iraq wants to build a modern port as part of its long-term commitment to transforming Iraq into a transportation corridor between the Middle East and Europe. This will be the Al Faw Grand Port, which will be situated in a tide-dominated, muddy environment with complex sediment dynamics. Deltares studied the impact of the port on the surrounding…
  11. Deltares builds scale model of navigation lock in IJmuiden

Deltares is working on a scale model of the new sea lock in IJmuiden in order to study the forces and the effects generated by freshwater and salt water on the ships. To accommodate ever-larger sea-going vessels, the lock will be one of the largest in the world, with a chamber that will be more than 500m long. It is expected to go operational in 2019.
    Future proof infrastructure
  12. Dikes on Peat

‘Dikes on Peat’ is an innovative research project that Deltares is carrying out in collaboration with the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier water authority and Rijkswaterstaat. The aim is to develop a new calculation method specifically for the dikes around the Markermeer lake. There are many dikes on peat in the province of North…
